Just days before the Pakistani Supreme Court was due to decide whether General Pervez Musharraf’s recent reelection was valid, he imposed emergency rule, suspended the Constitution, and fired the Supreme Court. Over the weekend, Musharraf’s military government arrested 500 opposition party figures and announced that journalists who bring “ridicule or disrepute” to the General could face up to three years in prison.
