Smoky, cheerless and often abandoned fires are commonplace both day and night. Not infrequently, our walks along the sea wall have to be curtailed because of smoke from the fire pit installations polluting the air. Groups may volunteer to clean up the fire pits, but who is going to ensure that painted or treated wood will not be burned, releasing toxic chemicals into the air? Even if untreated wood is burned the smoke itself is causing air pollution. If people want fires, let them go into the desert or away from the city; we have too much air pollution already.
